The world’s first albino ocelot according to some experts is not good news

World’s first albino ocelot found

After genetic testing, Colombia has confirmed that the world’s first albino ocelot was found. The animal, found when it was still a puppy, was initially mistaken for a kitten.

The albino ocelot is protected within a park

In reality, however, tests have confirmed that it is a native species of ocelot, found throughout the Americas. The animal, a female, now lives protected, inside the Conservation Park of Medellin. She is a healthy adult but had to undergo numerous treatments due to the multiple ailments she suffered from.

The impossibility of living in its natural habitat

The albino ocelot has reached a weight appropriate for its species and age but is blind. This problem, in addition to the fact that it is unable to blend in because of its white fur, means that it is unable to live in its natural habitat.

The concern of some experts

According to biologist Catalina Díaz Vasco, who made some statements to El País, the presence of the albino ocelot could mean that there are high levels of inbreeding in the population where the animal lives, and this would generate concern that the species may disappear locally.

Albino ocelot found may not be first

The biologist at Corantioquia, Ana Cristina Fernández, speculates that the albino ocelot found may not be the first. Other albino ocelots may have already hatched but not survived, due to the hostile environment.
