Tanzania’s First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan dies

Hafidh died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, with his death announced on Monday morning by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you of the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi said.

He conveyed condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives and friends, as well as Tanzanians across the country. Preparations for Hafidh’s burial were underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

The death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from Tanzanians and leaders across Africa, with messages of support directed to President Samia and her family.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his grief over Hafidh’s death and said Kenya stood with Tanzania during the period of mourning.

“President Samia has lost a spouse, and the children have lost a beloved parent. Kenya stands with our brothers and sisters in Tanzania during this difficult time,” Ruto said.

He also prayed for comfort and strength for President Samia and her family, while wishing Hafidh eternal rest.

Hafidh married Samia in 1978, and the couple had four children—three sons and a daughter.

He worked in Tanzania’s agricultural sector and was known for keeping a quiet and private life away from the public spotlight.

Even after his wife became President, Hafidh rarely appeared alongside her at official events or in government activities, maintaining a low public profile despite his position as the President’s husband.

His death comes as Tanzania begins mourning a figure who, despite his close connection to the country’s highest office, largely remained away from political and public life.
