South: New classrooms completed in Gisagara

New classrooms were constructed in Save sector, Gisagara district in Southern province in a continuous programme to reduce overcrowding of students once schools reopen.

Parents appreciated these classrooms as their children used to make a long journey to study far in the region called Shyanda.

Domina Mukarwemera, one of the parents embarked on the challenges they used to face due to shortage of classrooms.

“Our children used to go to study at Paroisse Save, they could arrive there tired and start sleeping in classrooms,” she said.

Mukarwemera and other parents from Save sector said that the new classrooms will help to increase education quality.

Claudine Mukagatsimbanyi, another parent who is a neighbor to the current classrooms said that she used to visit children at school and she observed that only students who sit in front benefit from the lessons as they cannot all see on the blackboard.

The nine (9) new classrooms that were inaugurated on August 7^th, 2020 will reduce such an overcrowding.

The school had only 17 classrooms and were not enough compa=ring to the number of students.

Innocent Nzuwonizeye, the head-teacher of Shyanda primary school said that one classroom used to host over 70 children,

He noted that this could not easily allow a teacher to follow all the students especially during a class evaluation exercises.

“Overcrowding was a serious problem. We had had 17 classrooms that host 1575 children. It was not easy for a teacher to cater for all students,” he said.

Jean Paul Habineza, the vice mayor of Gisagara district in charge of economic development said that current measures to construct more classrooms give a hope in ending the overcrowding and reducing the long journey of students to schools.

Early this month, 23 classrooms were inaugurated in various sectors of Gisagara district.

690 more classrooms are being constructed in the district to be completed by September 2020
