Gatsibo Initiates Major Water Plant Project to Serve One Million People

Gatsibo District authorities have announced the launch of a significant water plant construction project near Lake Muhazi in Murambi Sector. This new facility aims to deliver clean water to nearly one million residents across the districts of Kayonza, Gatsibo, and Nyagatare.

The plant, which is scheduled to be completed by June 2025, will cost over 7 billion Rwandan Francs. It will have the capacity to produce 12,000 cubic meters of water per day.

The construction work has already created jobs for about 1,000 people. The clean water from the plant is expected to benefit residents in eight sectors of Gatsibo District, three sectors in Kayonza District, and three sectors in Nyagatare District.

Gatsibo District Mayor, Gasana Richard, stated that the plant will be a significant solution, as it will supply water to eight out of the district’s 14 sectors.

He mentioned that the existing water supply infrastructure provided insufficient water, and they are confident that upon completion, the water plant will significantly increase access to clean water, reaching up to 95% of the population.

“This plant will not only supply water to our district but also to Kayonza District in the sectors of Murundi, Rukara, and Mukarange, as well as three sectors in Nyagatare District. Drawing water from Lake Muhazi has proven to be sustainable as the lake levels will replenish, ensuring continuous water supply for both residents and livestock without any issues.” Gasana said.

Mayor Gasana also mentioned that the comprehensive master plan for Gatsibo District includes measures to utilize the areas around Lake Muhazi for tourism development.
