RWF 100 million bridge to ease transport for Karongi residents

A bridge constructed in Karongi District, Rubengera Sector, Bubazi Cell, Makurungwe Village, has addressed the challenges faced by residents who previously struggled to cross during the rainy season. This infrastructure development, costing over 100 million Rwandan Francs, has also facilitated business activities for many.

Residents report that they can now cross easily, even during rainfall, allowing them to return home without difficulties, as the bridge connects the villages of Makurungwe and Kabuga.

Esther Muhimpundu, speaking to Imvaho Nshya, said: “Before this bridge was built, we faced various challenges, including not having a place to shop when it flooded and being unable to pass during rainy periods. Parents seeking medical treatment across in Makurungwe had a tough time waiting for the waters to recede.”

Celestin Habiyaremye, a resident of Bubazi Cell, noted: “The Musogoro River caused us many problems because it would overflow, leaving residents with no place to cross. Some had to take long detours to reach a location known as Kanyiramugozi to return home, which was a difficult journey.”

“Visiting people also required waiting for dry weather. However, we are grateful to the local authorities who advocated for the bridge’s construction; they truly did an excellent job. This bridge enables us to seek medical care without hassle, and students can attend school without issues. Thank you very much.” He added.

Goreth Nyiramihinda, who was heading out to sell goods, expressed how the bridge has significantly improved her business life, as she had previously halted trading, especially during the rainy season when there was no safe passage.

“Before this bridge was built, I often had to spend nights across the river due to rain in Kabuga Village, while my home is here in Makurungwe. I had to stop trading, but since the bridge was completed, I have resumed my business, and now I am working; our government has done a great job.” She said.

Pascasie Umuhoza, the vice mayor of Karongi District in charge of Social Affairs said that the bridge connecting Makurungwe and Kabuga cost over 100 million Rwandan Francs, and a total of 25 footbridges have been constructed throughout the district.

“This bridge was built alongside others, totaling 25 completed in our district, all costing over 100 million Rwandan Francs.” Umuhoza said.

The bridge was inaugurated in July 2024, and residents are encouraged to take good care of it to ensure it continues to serve them well.
