Rwandans in the Northern Province Raise Concerns Over Identity Card Errors and Delays

By The Inspirer.

Residents in the Northern Province of Rwanda are expressing frustration over delays and inaccuracies in obtaining identity cards, urging the National Identification Agency (NIDA) to address these issues promptly.

Among the challenges faced by these residents are difficulties accessing essential services such as travel, banking, land ownership, and legal matters due to missing or incorrect identification documents.

With national elections and local administrative appointments approaching in July 2024, residents emphasize the urgency of resolving these issues and receiving accurate replacements in a timely manner.

Samuel Niyonizeye, who has been without an identity card since 2008, voiced his frustration, stating, “I have been without an identity card since 2008, and attempts to rectify it have been futile. It has affected my ability to access various services, including obtaining my diplomas.”

Emmy Nisingizwe shared similar concerns, saying, “I applied for an identity card in April 2021, but it has yet to be processed. I worry about my voting rights being compromised due to this delay. Urgent action is needed to rectify this situation.”

Calls have been made for the digitization of identity cards to streamline processes, particularly for landowners who require updated information for land registration and legal purposes.

Aniseth Karake highlighted the broader implications of identity card errors, stating, “I applied for land registration but was rejected due to errors on my identity card. This issue affects not only me but also my family members listed on the same card. We urge for technological solutions to address these challenges promptly.”

Dieudonné Manago Kayihura, Head of the National Identification Agency, acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the public of ongoing efforts to address them.

“We recognize the need to update our identification system to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Our new project aims to streamline this process, providing each individual with a unique identification number,” stated Manago.

He emphasized the importance of proactive engagement from citizens in resolving identity card issues promptly, urging Rwandans to approach NIDA for assistance when needed. The National Identification Agency (NIDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving citizen services and accuracy in identity-related processes through ongoing reforms.

According to regulations, Rwandan citizens are entitled to receive their national identity cards within 30 days of application provided to comply with NIDA’s digital registration process.
