Rubis Energy Rwanda, Root and Shoots organization partner to educate staff about environment protection

Rubis Energy Rwanda Ltd says it is aware of its sector’s energy transition challenges.

The oil and gas sector plays a key role in energy access, which is essential to meet the fundamental needs of people (traveling, heating, cooling, lighting, and cooking) to support their development.

Nevertheless, even today, a large proportion of the population in many African countries is still deprived of access to energy.

Rwanda is dedicated to becoming a country that prioritizes a clean and thriving environment, capable of withstanding climate variations and changes while ensuring a high quality of life for its citizens. An active involvement of the private sector is pivotal in tackling this.

Rubis Energy is committed to protecting the environment and our valued customers.

It is in this context that Rubis Energy Rwanda partnered with Root and Shoots organization to organize a session to raise climate awareness amongst its staff.

Below are answers from Rubis Energy Rwanda on its main activities protecting the environment and how they partnered with Root and Shoots organization.

Root and Shoots organization is the global youth program of the Jane Goodall Institute. The R&S program is comprised of thousands of young people of all ages.

What are the main activities of Rubis Energy Rwanda Ltd which target the protection of the environment?

We are aware of changing expectations in society and the necessity of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, Rubis intends to support this energy transition by continuing to study and implement sustainable solutions. Rubis must find a balance between the expectations of customers wanting to access affordable energy, and the necessity of helping to combat climate change by reducing CO2 emissions related to its activities.

In one of the flagships stations, we have allocated space for EV plug charging for a good number of motorcycles.

We were number one in the Rwanda market in the retail business to introduce fuel with additive (ULTRATEC FUEL). The introduction of cleaner fuels is an effective way to reduce emissions. We will continue to promote and market this as a more environmentally friendly option for our customers.

We have a spill containment system in place.

We carry out regular inspections of fuel tanks to ensure no leakages and conduct repairs on time.

Promoting the usage of LPG (cooking gas).

Which activities have you carried out this year to protect the environment and reduce carbon footprint?

Protecting the environment is our priority in day-to-day activities

In partnership with the Roots and Shoots Association, the Rubis Rwanda team has.

Trained 100% of the staff on climate and environment protection awareness.

Planned tree-planting activities in different schools

Started the use of reusable water bottles provided by the company

Considered the use of energy-efficient LED lighting at all retail stations

How have you partnered with Root and Shoots organization?

To effectively address the impact of climate change and create awareness among staff, Rubis Energy Rwanda organized a capacity-building program in partnership with Root and Shoots organization to enhance staff awareness regarding environmental concerns.

We also engaged in tree planting in 6 different schools.

And not just planting trees, we will always select native or climate-appropriate tree species that will thrive in the local conditions and contribute to carbon sequestration and biodiversity.
