Residents urged to be more proactive than reactive to devastating disasters

Fumbwe residents in Rwamagana District have been urged to be at the forefront of fighting disasters instead of waiting tragic events to happen and face huge damages.

Minister of Ministry of Emergency Management Kamayirese Germaine advised these inhabitants during Umuganda activities where they planted trees and rehabilitated buildings at Jajangiro Secondary School which was recently destroyed by a strong wind.

The school was given 300 iron sheets to reconstruct 7 classrooms which were demolished on 18^th of this October 2018.

“We as Ministry in charge of Emergency Management we have the responsibility to provide rescue, but before we come in, you have to avoid disasters where it is possible, for instance, planting trees near this school could have prevented it from destruction, replacing old materials of the building could also have stopped such catastrophe,” Kamayirese advised the residents.

She went on saying that forest sustainability is one of the best strategies to prevent calamities as it protects soil erosion and avoid landslides as well as reduces wind speed which repeatedly obliterate infrastructures, mainly buildings.

The aid offered to the School values around Rwf 3 million, and both school District officials were required to maintain (facilities) on a daily basis.

The residents were also urged to combat once for all drug abuse which is harassing Eastern Province.

Children school dropouts also was a big concern, and any parent who does not take this issue seriously will face consequences which may lead to different measures including imprisonment.
