Rare leucistic vervet monkey spotted in Virunga National Park

A rare leucistic vervet monkey was recently captured on film in Lulimbi, in the central sector of Virunga National Park.

Leucism, a genetic condition similar to albinism, reduces pigmentation in fur and skin without affecting eye color. The condition is extremely uncommon, affecting only a small fraction of primates.

The monkey, known to park rangers and staff as “Prune,” has become familiar with those who care for Virunga’s wildlife. Its presence highlights the fragility of nature and the unique bonds that can form between humans and the animals they protect.

Park officials say sightings like this underscore the importance of conservation efforts in protecting rare and vulnerable species within Virunga’s diverse ecosystem.
