Nyamagabe: Three-month-old infant found dead while sleeping with father
A three-month-old infant, Umutoniwase Briella, was found dead while sleeping next to her father, with suspicions that the tragedy may be linked to domestic conflicts between the parents.
The incident occurred in Kagarama Village, Gasarenda Cell, Tare Sector, in Nyamagabe District.
Reports that emerged on February 23, 2025, indicate that the child’s father had spent the day drinking and allegedly assaulted multiple people he encountered on his way home. Upon arriving home, he reportedly turned violent towards his wife, forcing her to flee.
According to neighbors, the mother returned in the morning only to find her child had passed away. It is suspected that the baby may have been harmed during the altercation between the parents, leading to the tragic death.
Southern Province Police Spokesperson, SP Emmanuel Habiyaremye, confirmed to IGIHE that the infant’s body was taken to Kigeme Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
“The three-month-old infant, Umutoniwase Briella, was found dead while sleeping next to her father. The body has been taken to Kigeme Hospital for examination, and the father, who is suspected of involvement in the child’s death, has been taken into custody,” SP Habiyaremye stated.
He further confirmed that the suspect is currently being held at Tare Police Station as investigations continue.
Additional reports indicate that the father had previously expressed doubts about the child’s paternity, raising suspicions that, under the influence of alcohol, he may have committed the crime.
