MINEDUC pays tribute to former Employees, Students, and Teachers killed in Genocide

The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) recently commemorated 77 former employees, teachers, and students who tragically lost their lives during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The event, held on April 15, underscored the pivotal role of inclusive education in fostering unity and reconciliation in Rwanda.

Claudette Irere, the State Minister at MINEDUC, underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to providing high-quality education to every Rwandan child.

“It is a profound honor to pay homage to our departed colleagues and students. Their memory serves as a beacon, propelling us forward towards a brighter collective future.” She said.

Naphtal Ahishakiye, the Executive Secretary of IBUKA, acknowledged the strides made in commemorating genocide victims within the education sector.

However, he emphasized the ongoing imperative for comprehensive commemorative initiatives, particularly in primary and secondary educational institutions.

“We must maintain steadfast dedication in our commemoration endeavors, especially in enlightening our youth about the perils of genocide ideology and the imperative of unity.” He noted.

Erasme Ntazinda, a survivor of the genocide, shared poignant insights during the ceremony, illuminating the hardships endured by Tutsi students before and during those tragic times.

“Education is our bridge to honor the past, empower the present, and safeguard the future. Let us etch the lessons of history into our collective consciousness.” He said.

Antoinette Muhirwe, a teacher, underscored the profound significance of events like these in fostering healing and reconciliation while ensuring the indelible remembrance of Rwanda’s historical journey.

“These events serve as poignant reminders of human resilience and the transformative prowess of education in forging a more harmonious and inclusive societal fabric.”
