Liverpool court sentences 18 year old Axel Rudakubana to 52 years for triple murder and attempted killings

The Liverpool Crown Court in the United Kingdom has sentenced Axel Rudakubana, 18, to 52 years in prison after he was found guilty of murdering three children and attempting to kill 10 others.

The court explained that Rudakubana, who committed the crimes at the age of 17, could have faced a life sentence, but mitigating factors were considered during sentencing.

The ruling, issued on January 23, 2025, faced delays as Rudakubana disrupted proceedings, loudly demanding medical attention and claiming he was unwell.

A gruesome crime in Southport

Rudakubana carried out these crimes on July 29, 2024, in Southport, alongside the three victims—Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King, and Elsie Dot Stancombe. Prosecutors revealed that upon his arrest, Rudakubana expressed no remorse, telling police:
> “I’m glad those kids are dead. It makes me happy. I don’t care; I feel nothing.”

Investigators found evidence in his bedroom, including traces of *ricin*, a poison he reportedly made using materials purchased from Amazon in early 2022. While the substance was not potent enough to cause significant harm in small amounts, its presence raised serious concerns.

Prosecutors also disclosed that Rudakubana possessed a document linked to the terrorist group Al Qaeda, which contained instructions that allegedly inspired his knife attack on the children.

Courtroom chaos

Throughout the trial, Rudakubana repeatedly interrupted proceedings. On the morning of January 23, he shouted: “I won’t stay silent. I haven’t eaten in 10 days. I need a doctor because I’m sick.”

Before the ruling, Rudakubana attempted to block the announcement, forcing the court to briefly suspend proceedings after he shouted for 30 seconds straight. Judge Goose ultimately ordered his removal from the courtroom.

When court resumed in the afternoon, medical assessments confirmed Rudakubana was fit to attend the hearing despite his outbursts.

A long-awaited sentencing

Rudakubana’s sentencing came after he surprised the court on December 20, 2024, by pleading guilty to all charges, just days after initially refusing to respond to accusations. Judge Goose sentenced him to 52 years in prison, considering the severity of his actions.

Concerns about Rudakubana’s mental health arose during the investigation, as records revealed he had been admitted to a children’s mental health facility three times in the past. However, this was not deemed sufficient to absolve him of responsibility for his crimes.
