By Elias Hakizimana.

The coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new king of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom is taking place at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal.

He is being crowned Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, succeeding the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died in August 2026.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend the ceremony, which brings together members of the Tooro royal family, traditional leaders, government officials and members of the public.

The ceremony follows traditional rituals and celebrations held across the kingdom ahead of the coronation.

Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a former journalist, was selected to succeed King Oyo by the kingdom’s traditional royal advisers, known as the Abiru. His selection had faced objections from some members of the royal family, who said the late king had left a child.

The coronation at Karuziika Palace marks the formal installation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new Omukama of Tooro.
