Kagame, First Lady light the flame of remembrance to launch 31st commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi

President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame lit the Flame of Hope to mark the beginning of the 31st Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

President Kagame and the First Lady also paid tribute to the innocent victims of the Genocide and laid wreaths at their burial site.

The ceremony took place at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where the remains of over 250,000 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi are laid to rest.

This Flame of Hope, symbolizing remembrance and resilience, will burn for 100 days. It was lit on Monday, April 7, 2024.

The theme for #Kwibuka31 this year is: “Remember – Unite – Renew.”

At the national level, the Week of Mourning was launched at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi.

Commemorative activities also took place across various villages throughout the country, as citizens engaged in the 31st remembrance of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

These events included discussions about how the Genocide was planned, how it was executed, and how Rwanda has rebuilt itself in the aftermath.

The talks also focused on the journey of unity and resilience that Rwandans have embarked on following the Genocide, which claimed the lives of over one million Tutsi in just three months.
