Jeannette Kagame hails IBUKA’s 30-year journey of resilience and remembrance

First Lady Jeannette Kagame has commended the 30-year journey of IBUKA, the umbrella organization of survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, for its enduring role in advocating for survivors, preserving memory, and promoting resilience.

Speaking during the commemoration of IBUKA’s 30th anniversary, Jeannette Kagame praised the courage of those who founded the organization in 1995 and the Rwandans who have continued to support its mission.

She said Rwanda continues to bear the painful legacy of the Genocide against the Tutsi, describing remembrance as a national responsibility and a vital part of preserving the country’s history.

“Rwanda suffered a great tragedy. It is a painful burden that this is a legacy we must continue to carry as a nation,” she said.

Jeannette Kagame noted that IBUKA’s three-decade journey reflects the resilience of a generation that endured profound suffering but chose to rebuild and live on.

“These 30 years of IBUKA reflect the journey of a generation that endured profound hardship and grief, yet made the courageous decision to live on,” she said.

She praised survivors for choosing forgiveness despite the pain they endured, calling it one of the most powerful acts of courage.

“To forgive is not weakness—it is a great strength of heart, the courage to reject the chains of hatred and resentment,” she said.

The First Lady warned against complacency, stressing that peace and security should not lead Rwandans to lower their guard while genocide denial and distortion of history persist.

She urged young people to take responsibility for safeguarding Rwanda’s future and ensuring the promise of “Never Again” remains a lived commitment rather than a slogan.

IBUKA founder Dr. Rose Mukankomeje called for stronger efforts to teach history to younger generations, including through academic institutions, to prevent distortion of the truth.

IBUKA President Dr. Philbert Gakwenzire said the organization has spent the last 30 years advocating for survivors, preserving genocide memory, and pursuing justice, while noting that challenges such as genocide denial and fugitives linked to the genocide remain.
