Inside CHUK’s new Rwf 600 million kitchen: A game-changer in patient nutrition
By Elias Hakizimana.
Solid Africa, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable patients, has launched the Mike Stenbock Gemura Kitchen, a state-of-the-art facility at the Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK) on January 3, 2025.
This groundbreaking project, costing over RWF 600 million, represents a milestone in addressing malnutrition-related challenges in Rwanda’s healthcare system.
Officially inaugurated by Dr. Zachée Iyakaremye, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, the kitchen is a product of collaboration between Solid Africa and the Ministry of Health.
For years, many patients in Rwandan hospitals have faced difficulties accessing nutritious meals. Often, available food is insufficient in quality and quantity to support recovery.

Solid Africa has tackled this issue by providing meals to vulnerable patients in six district hospitals. Over its 14 years of operation, the organization has served more than eight million meals to over 700,000 patients and currently delivers 20,000 meals daily.
The new kitchen at CHUK, designed to produce 8,000 meals per day, introduces semi-automated processes and clean energy practices, ensuring both efficiency and sustainability.
According to Isabelle Kamaliza, founder of Solid Africa, this facility symbolizes hope and commitment: “Food is life. Food is love. This kitchen will ensure patients receive high-quality meals promptly, aiding their recovery.”

Beneficiary testimonials
Jean Nsanzabaganwa, who has been caring for a patient at CHUK, described the kitchen’s impact as transformative.
“For those coming from far places like Rusizi or Nyagatare, it was challenging for families to bring food. Now, meals are available three times a day.”
Similarly, Donatha Mukampazimaka from Ngoma District highlighted how the kitchen alleviates challenges for patients and their caregivers, adding, “We’re eating better here than at home, even during the holidays.”
A Public-Private Partnership Model
This initiative is the first of three pilot projects under a Public-Private Partnership with the Government of Rwanda.

Dr. Tharcisse Mpunga, Director General of CHUK, lauded the project’s potential. “This is a model that needs to be replicated across other hospitals. It aligns with the quality and safety standards we need.”
Dr. Zachée Iyakaremye reinforced the government’s commitment to scaling up this initiative by inaugurating similar kitchens at Remera Rukoma Hospital in Kamonyi District and Nyamata Hospital in Bugesera District later this year.
Hospitals equipped with such facilities will no longer permit external meals, ensuring consistent quality and offering affordable meal options for caregivers.
Economic and social impact
Solid Africa’s efforts extend beyond providing meals. Through its “Farm to fork” model, the organization partners with over 4,500 smallholder farmers to source fresh, locally grown produce, reducing post-harvest losses and boosting local incomes. Plans are underway to expand this network to 50,000 farmers within five years, creating a robust and sustainable food system.

The profits from meals sold to hospital staff and visitors will be reinvested to maintain kitchen operations. This 24/7 facility ensures uninterrupted meal services, setting a benchmark for transformative healthcare solutions.
In addition to nutrition, Solid Africa provides various forms of assistance, including medication not covered by insurance, clean water, hygiene support, transportation for discharged patients, and building play areas for children. These comprehensive interventions underline the organization’s dedication to holistic patient care.
A Vision for nationwide transformation
The Mike Stenbock Gemura Kitchen is not merely a facility; it is a testament to Solid Africa’s vision for a healthier Rwanda. As the organization scales its operations to include all 47 public district hospitals nationwide, it sets a precedent for sustainable, impactful change in hospital care.
Dr. Iyakaremye aptly summed up the initiative’s significance. “Nutritious food is essential to human health. The Ministry of Health is committed to supporting this initiative and ensuring that modern kitchens like this are established across Rwanda.”
Solid Africa’s innovative approach marks a turning point in addressing nutrition insecurity and fostering health equity, offering a model for sustainable transformation in Rwanda’s healthcare system.
