Extended operating hours announced for businesses during 2025 UCI Road World Championships

Kigali, 19 September 2025 — In preparation for the upcoming 2025 UCI Road World Championships, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has announced that all businesses, including shopping centers, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, will be allowed to operate until 4:00 am from 19 to 28 September 2025.

The move is part of a series of temporary measures aimed at enhancing hospitality and boosting economic activity during the prestigious international cycling event, which is expected to attract thousands of athletes, fans, and tourists from around the globe.

“The extension of operating hours is intended to provide flexibility and a vibrant atmosphere for both residents and visitors, while supporting the tourism and service industries,” said a statement from the RDB.

Normally subject to earlier closing times, hospitality and retail businesses now have the opportunity to take full advantage of the influx of international guests. Local business owners have welcomed the announcement, anticipating increased sales and longer customer engagement.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us,” said Jeanne Uwamahoro, manager of a popular Kigali nightclub. “We are preparing special promotions and events to make the most of the extended hours. It’s going to be an exciting time for the city.”

However, RDB has emphasized that the extension comes with responsibilities. All existing regulations—including those on noise pollution and alcohol sales—remain in effect. The Board has urged business owners to maintain safety standards and ensure responsible service, particularly regarding the sale of alcohol.

The 2025 UCI Road World Championships will be the first time the event is held in Africa, marking a historic moment for Rwanda and the continent. The extended business hours reflect the country’s commitment to offering world-class hospitality throughout the competition.

RDB, in collaboration with other government agencies, has assured the public that enforcement mechanisms are in place to ensure compliance with the guidelines. Entities that fail to adhere to the regulations may face penalties.

As Rwanda prepares to take the global stage, the extended hours signal both a celebration and a strategic effort to create a welcoming environment for all.
