Ensuring Food Security in Rwanda: The Role of CALA and the Drive of Youthful Innovation

In the heart of Rwanda, amidst rolling hills and lush greenery, lies a nation striving to achieve food security for its people. Agriculture remains the backbone of Rwanda’s economy, employing over 70% of the population.

However, the sector faces challenges such as limited land availability, unpredictable weather patterns, and outdated farming practices. To address these challenges and ensure a sustainable food future, Rwanda is turning to its youth and organizations like the Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA).

Francois Nsengiyumva, the Managing Director of Kilimo General Business, an agriculture enterprise in Rwanda, embodies the spirit of Rwanda’s youthful agricultural revolution.

 “I’ve always been in farming since my childhood,” he asserts, his voice filled with passion for the land. Nsengiyumva, a CALA alumnus, recognizes the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in the ever-evolving agricultural landscape. “I needed to upgrade my skills because technology is always changing,” he explains, “and CALA was instrumental in providing me with the knowledge and tools to modernize my farming practices.”

Nsengiyumva’s time at CALA was transformative. “The training at CALA was eye-opening,” he recalls. “I learned about sustainable farming practices, market linkages, and leadership skills, all of which have been invaluable in running my business.” CALA’s emphasis on hands-on learning particularly resonated with Nsengiyumva.

“We didn’t just learn from textbooks; we visited farms, interacted with experts, and applied our knowledge in real-world settings,” he says, adding that this practical approach has made a huge difference in his ability to implement effective change.

The impact of Nsengiyumva’s CALA training extends far beyond his own business. He has become a mentor and trainer to other farmers in his community, sharing his knowledge and expertise to empower others to improve their agricultural practices. “I believe that knowledge is power,” Nsengiyumva asserts. “And I am committed to sharing what I have learned with others so that we can all raise the bar of agriculture in Rwanda.”

Nsengiyumva is particularly passionate about the role of youth in Rwanda’s agricultural transformation. “We need more youth in agriculture because they are more educated than us the older generation,” he emphasizes. “They bring fresh perspectives and are more tech-savvy, which is crucial for adopting modern farming techniques.” Nsengiyumva believes that the future of Rwanda’s agriculture lies in the hands of its young people. “Youth are the innovators, the risk-takers, and the drivers of change,” he declares. “We need to create an environment where they can thrive and contribute their ideas to the sector.”

Nsengiyumva’s call for action is echoed by CALA, which is committed to empowering youth to lead the transformation of African agriculture.

CALA’s Youth in Agribusiness and Rural Entrepreneurship (YARE) program provides young entrepreneurs with the skills and resources they need to launch and sustain successful agribusinesses. Through training, mentorship, and networking opportunities, CALA is nurturing a new generation of agricultural leaders who are ready to tackle the challenges and embrace the opportunities of the future.

Nsengiyumva’s story is a testament to the power of youth and innovation in transforming Rwanda’s agricultural landscape. With organizations like CALA empowering the next generation of agricultural leaders, Rwanda is poised to achieve food security and become a beacon of sustainable agriculture in Africa.
