Egyptian investor eyes Rwanda’s leather sector for major factory investment

Egyptian businessman Hesham Gazar, Chief Executive Officer of Leather and More Company, is in Rwanda exploring investment opportunities in the country’s rapidly growing leather sector.

During his visit, Gazar met with leaders of the Rwanda Leather Association (RLA), the umbrella body for leather processors and manufacturers, headed by President Kamayirese Jean d’Amour. Discussions focused on potential partnerships to establish a leather processing and manufacturing plant in Rwanda, with an emphasis on value addition to hides and skins from both small and large livestock.

Speaking to the media, Gazar praised Rwanda’s investment climate and the professionalism of local leather producers. “I am impressed by the organization within the Rwanda Leather Association and the potential of this sector for regional and international markets. My aim is to partner with local stakeholders to establish a leather factory here. Within one to four weeks, I hope to present a clear roadmap for cooperation,” he said.

President Kamayirese highlighted Rwanda’s pro-investment policies and government support for industrial development under President Paul Kagame, noting that such initiatives are attracting investors from Egypt and beyond. “Our objective is to build a factory that strengthens local production and promotes the ‘Made in Rwanda’ brand,” he said.

The proposed investment is expected to boost value addition along the livestock and leather supply chain, generate employment, transfer technical expertise, and reduce reliance on imported leather products. It aligns with Rwanda’s broader strategy to accelerate industrialization and position the country as a competitive manufacturing hub in the region.
