Cycling: Remco Wins Third Consecutive ITT World Title in Kigali

Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel clinched the men’s individual time trial (ITT) at the UCI Road World Championships for the third year in a row, clocking 49 minutes and 6 seconds on Sunday, September 21, 2025, in Kigali.

The championship, which kicked off in Kigali with the women’s ITT earlier in the day, saw Evenepoel start at exactly 4:00 p.m. He quickly built up speed and managed to catch up with Tadej Pogačar, the world’s top-ranked rider, who had set off two minutes and 30 seconds earlier.

As the race climbed the cobblestone section near Kimihurura, Evenepoel overtook Pogačar and powered his way to the finish line at the Kigali Convention Centre, sealing another historic victory.

The 25-year-old rider now becomes a three-time consecutive world champion in this discipline, having previously won in Glasgow (2023) and Zurich (2024). Kigali marks his third triumph.

Australia’s Jay Vine finished second with a time of 51 minutes, while Belgium’s Ilan Van Wilder took third in 52 minutes, 22 seconds.

Rwanda’s Nsengiyumva Shemu, who was the first men’s rider to start, placed 25th, trailing Evenepoel by 6 minutes and 55 seconds. His compatriot Mugisha Moïse finished 31st, 8 minutes and 54 seconds behind the winner.

Despite high expectations, Tadej Pogačar placed fourth, covering the 40.6 km course in 52 minutes, 23 seconds, 2 minutes and 37 seconds slower than Evenepoel. He will return to action in the men’s road race on Sunday, September 28, 2025, covering 267.5 km.

The Kigali-hosted World Championships continue on Monday, September 22, with the under-23 men’s and women’s ITT events.

• The U23 men will race over 31.2 km, starting at 1:35 p.m., with Rwanda represented by Tuyizere Etienne and Niyonkuru Samuel.

• The U23 women will tackle 22.6 km from 10:30 a.m., with Rwanda fielding Nyirarukundo Claudette and Mwamikazi Jazilla.
