Baltasar, who slept with 400 women, sentenced to 18 years in prison

A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Baltasar Ebang Engonga to 18 years in prison after finding him guilty of embezzlement, money laundering, and abuse of power for personal gain.

Baltasar drew international attention in 2024 when videos surfaced on social media allegedly showing him with around 400 women.

Investigators said he kept explicit recordings on various digital devices. The scandal divided public opinion, with some claiming the leaks were a smear campaign to derail his reported presidential ambitions.

Baltasar argued the videos were consensual, claiming some women even requested to be filmed. Reports suggested wives of senior officials were among those involved, fueling speculation of a political plot.

The prosecution sought eight years for embezzlement, four years and five months for money laundering and illicit enrichment, and six years and one day for abusing his official authority.

He was also fined 910 million CFA francs and barred from holding public office for the duration of his sentence.

The case implicated other officials linked to the national insurance and reinsurance agency, highlighting broader corruption concerns. Baltasar, who comes from a powerful political family and is the nephew of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, now stands at the center of what some observers see as a rare push against impunity in the oil-rich nation.
