Alain Mukuralinda leaves legacy of humility and dedication to education at farewell mass

The Archbishop of Kigali and President of the Episcopal Conference in Rwanda, Antoine Cardinal Kambanda, stated that Alain Mukuralinda was known for his humility and for promoting the talents of young people, leaving behind a significant legacy in education.

He delivered this message on April 10, 2025, during a Mass held to pray for and bid farewell to Mukuralinda. The Mass took place at Rulindo Catholic Parish in Rulindo District, Northern Province.

The ceremony brought together family, friends, journalists, former colleagues, and a wide array of others who came to honor his life.

In heartfelt testimonies, many spoke of Mukuralinda’s deep love for people and his country.

Cardinal Kambanda said Mukuralinda was characterized by humility and a genuine love for others.

“Mukuralinda was someone who loved people because of his love for God. He saw Jesus Christ in others, which made him welcome them with the strength and dedication he had,” said the Cardinal.

“He leaves us with a great legacy in education. He was observant and noticed children with talent, especially those from poor backgrounds who lacked opportunities to develop their potential, benefit from it, and support their families and the country. He helped them.” He added.

In words filled with emotion and sorrow, Mukuralinda’s wife described him as a kind man who cherished family, and she thanked all those who supported them during this time of grief.

Sina Gérard, a member of Mukuralinda’s family, said he passed away at a time when his family, his country, and the world still needed him.

He noted that in all the work Mukuralinda did, he was marked by bravery and love for his country.

“He loved ordinary people, those with emerging talents—whether athletes or artists. That’s what God calls us to do, and it’s what a Christian should strive for. Though I am older than him, we had a strong connection, especially in helping the youth and even in innovation,” he said.

Mukuralinda hailed from Rulindo District but was born in Butare on May 12, 1970, as his parents were working at the HVP Gatagara Center for People with Disabilities.

He attended primary school at APE Rugunga and secondary school at St. Aloys Rwamagana. He later studied law at a university in Belgium.

On September 6, 2006, Mukuralinda married his wife, and together they had two children.
