Uganda: Gen. Muhoozi says 30 killed, 2,000 arrested after presidential election

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, says security forces have killed 30 people and arrested about 2,000 others in operations targeting opposition supporters following the country’s recent presidential election.

Gen. Muhoozi made the remarks on January 23, 2026, in a post on the social media platform X.

President Yoweri Museveni, 81, was declared the winner of Uganda’s January 15, 2026 presidential election, defeating opposition leader Bobi Wine of the National Unity Platform (NUP). The vote was conducted amid an internet shutdown.

According to Gen. Muhoozi, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are responding to what he described as attempts by opposition elements to destabilize the country.

In his post, he said those killed were linked to NUP and described them as “terrorists,” adding that other alleged leaders were in hiding and that security operations were continuing.

Bobi Wine has not appeared in public since the election results were announced. The Ugandan government accuses him and his supporters of inciting post-election violence, including attacks on and arson at polling stations in some areas.

Opposition figures and human rights organizations have raised concerns over the use of force, mass arrests, and restrictions on political freedoms in Uganda following elections.
