Rwanda records 89.1% pass rate in 2024/2025 secondary exams

The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) has announced the results of the 2024/2025 state secondary school leaving examinations, revealing a significant improvement in student performance nationwide.

Out of 106,418 students who registered for the exams, 106,078 sat, and 94,409 passed — representing an overall pass rate of 89.1%. Boys recorded a higher pass rate at 93.5%, compared to 85.5% for girls.

The results, released on September 1, 2025, show a sharp rise from the 78% pass rate recorded in the 2023/2024 academic year.

Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana welcomed the progress, attributing it to the enthusiasm of students and the commitment of teachers, particularly under the ongoing national literacy program. “The students did well, and we are pleased with the results,” he said.

Detailed MINEDUC data highlights notable improvements across score brackets. Students scoring between 50–60 rose from 14,438 last year to 16,590 this year; those in the 60–70 range increased from 12,624 to 17,933; while scores between 70–80 climbed from 8,066 to 12,234. The number of high achievers nearly doubled, with 4,668 students scoring between 80–90 (up from 2,771), and 242 students reaching the top bracket of 90–100 (up from 117).

At the district level, Kayonza led with a success rate of 96.9%, followed by Kirehe at 95%. On the lower end, Kamonyirecorded 85% and Nyarugenge 87.1%.
