Minister Nsanzimana discusses urgent strategies with scientists to combat Marburg outbreak

Rwanda’s Minister of Health, Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, held virtual discussions with the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG), an expert panel collaborating with both national and international partners to devise science-based solutions to combat the Marburg virus outbreak.

According to a statement shared by the Ministry of Health on its X platform, the meeting was also attended by the State Minister in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Yvan Butera.

The first cases of Marburg virus in Rwanda were reported on September 27, 2024. As of now, the virus has infected 61 people, with 14 fatalities, according to data from the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC).

Of those infected, 16 have recovered, while 31 patients are still receiving treatment. To date, over 3,272 people have been tested for the virus.

The Rwandan government continues to urge citizens to adhere to preventative measures, including avoiding close contact with individuals displaying symptoms and maintaining proper hygiene. Additionally, the government is rolling out vaccinations to high-risk individuals, with over 346 vaccines already administered.

Symptoms of the Marburg virus include high fever, abdominal pain, headaches, and diarrhea. Anyone experiencing these symptoms or aware of someone showing signs is urged to contact health authorities immediately for assistance.

Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of the African Union’s Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), recently visited Kigali and expressed his appreciation for the Rwandan government’s swift and effective response to the outbreak. He affirmed that Africa CDC will continue to support Rwanda in combating the virus and preventing its further spread.
