Meteo Rwanda issues warning for strong winds

The Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) has announced that from Thursday, October 3 to October 4, 2024, the country is expected to experience strong winds with speeds ranging from 6 to 13 meters per second.

Through a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Meteo Rwanda urged various authorities and the public to take precautions to avoid potential damage caused by the high winds.

“Meteo Rwanda encourages authorities responsible for disaster prevention and the public at large to take necessary precautions to mitigate the impacts of strong winds, based on weather forecast reports,” the statement read.

Winds exceeding 12 m/s are expected in the districts of Kirehe and Rutsiro, as well as in the northern parts of Rubavu, Nyabihu, and Nyamasheke districts. Additionally, strong winds are forecast for the western areas of Karongi and Musanze districts.

Winds ranging between 8 m/s and 12 m/s are expected in most parts of the Eastern Province, excluding Akagera National Park, and the western areas of Ngoma District. These winds are also predicted for other parts of the Western Province, Musanze District, northern Gicumbi District, western Nyamagabe District, and Burera District.

In the remaining parts of the country, moderate to strong winds with speeds between 6 m/s and 8 m/s are expected.

Meteo Rwanda also highlighted the potential impacts of strong winds, such as roofs being blown off, tree branches falling, and possible power outages (Serwakira).
