Girls Excel in Primary Leaving Examinations while Boys Lead in O-Level Performance

On Tuesday, August 27, the Ministry of Education released the results for the 2023-2024 national exams, covering both Primary schools and the Ordinary Level of secondary schools (O-Level).

In total, 202,021 students participated in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), with 111,249 girls and 90,772 boys taking part. Meanwhile, 143,227 candidates, including 79,933 girls and 63,294 boys, sat for the O-Level exams.

The PLE results revealed that girls outshined boys, achieving a 97 percent pass rate compared to 96.6 percent for boys, contributing to an overall pass rate of 96.8 percent.

Conversely, in the O-Level exams, boys outperformed girls, securing a 95.8 percent pass rate, while girls attained a 92 percent pass rate. The overall pass rate for O-Level was recorded at 93.8 percent.

Minister of Education Twagirayezu Gaspard, who presented the results, highlighted the impressive performance of primary school students, particularly in core subjects.

Mathematics, for instance, saw a 71.9 percent pass rate, while Science and Elementary Technology, along with Kinyarwanda, each achieved a 99.5 percent pass rate. English recorded a 90.7 percent pass rate, and Social and Religious Studies topped the list with a 99.7 percent pass rate.

For O-Level exams, Kinyarwanda led with a 99.9 percent pass rate, followed closely by English and Entrepreneurship with 99.8 percent and 99.1 percent pass rates, respectively.

Geography and Environment had a pass rate of 98.7 percent, while History and Citizenship saw a 96.4 percent pass rate. Mathematics recorded a 90 percent pass rate, and Biology and Health Sciences achieved 89.9 percent. Chemistry and Physics had lower pass rates, with Chemistry at 80.8 percent and Physics at 60.3 percent.
