Bishop Rusengo calls on FARDC to avoid fighting in Bukavu

The Catholic Archbishop of Bukavu, Bishop François-Xavier Maroy Rusengo, has called for the Democratic Republic of Congo’s armed forces (FARDC) to refrain from engaging in combat within the city of Bukavu.

In his statement, Bishop Rusengo referenced Psalm 124:8, which reads, “Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth,” reminding South Kivu Governor of the significant loss of life in the ongoing conflict between the RDC military and the M23 rebel group.

Bishop Rusengo stressed the importance of protecting civilian areas, saying, “It is crucial to avoid fighting in major cities and among civilian populations.” He also raised concerns about reports of RDC soldiers killing civilians, mistakenly identifying them as enemies as they leave or return from battle.

Additionally, the Bishop revealed that some RDC soldiers are reportedly planning to position weapons in civilian neighborhoods in Bukavu, potentially transforming the city into a battleground. “It has been reported that there are efforts to set up weapons in peaceful areas, seemingly attempting to turn Bukavu into a warzone. This requires serious reflection, especially in light of the recent violence in Goma,” he stated.

Bishop Rusengo’s remarks come as the RDC government fears the M23 could soon seize Bukavu, after capturing other areas in South Kivu, including Nyabibwe and the Kalehe region. Reports also indicate that the Kavumu airport has recently been attacked.
