Two die in crash during opening stage of Tour du Rwanda

Two people lost their lives and six others were injured in a road accident involving vehicles leading the race convoy at the start of this year’s Tour du Rwanda, organizers have confirmed.

The 2026 edition of Tour du Rwanda began on Sunday, February 22, with the opening stage running from Gicumbi District to Rwamagana District.

Ahead of the cyclists, a convoy of promotional vehicles participating in the race parade was driving along the route. Upon reaching Gabiro in Gatsibo District, one of the vehicles reportedly veered off the road and struck spectators who were standing by the roadside.

Two people died at the scene, while six others sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to hospital for treatment. The Rwanda National Police has launched investigations to determine the cause of the crash.

After the stage concluded, the President of the Rwanda Cycling Federation, Samson Ndayishimiye, requested a moment of silence from residents and cycling fans gathered in Rwamagana to honor the victims.

Candy Basomingera, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Sports, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and urged motorists and spectators to strictly observe road safety measures.

“We are saddened by the loss of lives during the first stage of Tour du Rwanda. We call upon all road users to exercise caution and urge spectators to remain vigilant while supporting the race. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, and we wish a swift recovery to those injured,” she said.

Israel’s Itamar Einhorn, riding for UCI ProTeam NSN Cycling Team, won the opening stage and claimed the yellow jersey. He was followed by Hodei Gabina Munoz of Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team and Mewael Girmay of Istanbul Team.
