The New Times.

A 19-year-old female student is in custody following the probe launched Friday, December 1, when a stillborn was found in the University of Rwanda (UR) Huye campus.

The institution’s spokesperson, Ignatius Kabagambe, on Saturday confirmed that ” The 19-year-old girl, a first-year student at University of Rwanda, was arrested for abortion.”

The stillborn was found, by a worker, nearby a girls’ hostel on Friday.

In 2012, it was reported that abortion was on the rise at the university formerly known as NUR.

Female students joining the National University of Rwanda were reportedly at risk of getting pregnant in their first academic year.

Surveys showed that in about 100 female students, nearly 36 got pregnant, every year.
