Nyamasheke: Man neaten to death after being caught with two stolen pigs

A 29-year-old man, Ntabwoba Isaac, was beaten to death by community night patrol members in Nyamasheke District after he was caught with two pigs suspected to have been stolen from a resident, Iyamuremye Daniel, in Murambi Village, Mubumbano Cell, Kagano Sector.

The four patrol members involved in the beating are currently detained at the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) station in Kagano, as investigations continue into both the theft and the fatal assault.

According to a resident of Murambi Village, the incident happened at around 4:45 a.m. when night patrol members returning from duty encountered Ntabwoba with companions whose number could not be confirmed. The group had two pigs, one alive and the other already dead. The suspect was caught while his accomplices escaped. Patrol members raised an alarm, residents rushed to the scene, and he was beaten until he died.

Further inquiries confirmed that the pigs had been stolen from Iyamuremye Daniel. A resident from Ruvumbu Village, Buvungira Cell, Bushekeri Sector, where the suspect came from, said Ntabwoba had a reputation for theft and violence and was suspected of drug abuse, which often drove him into crime. He had just been released a month ago after serving a three-month sentence for theft and assault.

Family members admitted that Ntabwoba had become difficult to handle after losing both parents. They said he no longer respected anyone in the family and had been linked to theft and insecurity in the community.

Kagano Sector Executive Secretary Uwimana Damas confirmed the incident, noting that aside from the pigs, Ntabwoba was also found with a hammer and a metal object suspected to have been used to kill one of the pigs. He said four suspects had been arrested and the case is under investigation at RIB Kagano station.

Uwimana urged young people to avoid theft and other criminal behavior that can lead to serious consequences, including death. He also called on residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead work closely with local authorities and security organs so that suspects are prosecuted through legal procedures.
