Nyagatare: Thunderstorm kills five cows, rain destroys 69 houses

Heavy rains in Nyagatare District caused thunderstorms that killed five cows of a citizen. This incident comes after another rain that destroyed 69 houses in Musheri Sector yesterday.
The rains fell on Monday evening, October 26, 2020, killing five cows belonging to the citizen called Muhutu Samuel, a resident of Karungi Village, Nyagatare Cell in Nyagatare Sector.
Nyagatare District Mayor Mushabe David Claudien told IGIHE that all five cows were struck by thunderstorms and died instantly.
“Five cows that were struck by thunderstorms are from Nyagatare Sector, and we are still collecting the figures to determine the damage,” he said.
WHEN he learned that a 67-year-old Hutu owned nine cows, around 5pm when it rained heavily, the thunderstorm struck his cows and killed five people, including two mothers and three bulls.
This comes after another heavy rain yesterday, October 25, 2020 destroyed 69 houses in Musheri Sector.
Musheri Sector Executive Secretary Kamu Steven told IGIHE that residents have been accommodating their neighbors affected by the rains while community work is expected to help them restore the roofs properly.
He said that the government will give new iron sheets for those who had old ones and reminded them to fix the roofs properly to avoid future incidents by heavy rains.
Citizens are urged to take out animal insurance to make it easier for compensation.
Heavy rains had also destroyed more than 200 houses in Kirehe District in recent weeks and damaged many plantations.
