Mutesi Scovia Elected as Chairperson of the Rwanda Media Commission

Journalist Mutesi Scovia has been elected as the Chairperson of the Rwanda Media Commission (RMC). The elections took place on the evening of Friday, November 15, and were attended by journalists accredited by the RMC.

Mutesi Scovia competed against Rwanyange Anthère, who eventually withdrew, stating that it was time for a woman to lead the commission. Out of the 123 journalists who cast their votes, Mutesi won with a majority of 87 votes, while 36 votes were invalid.

Reverend Pastor Jean-Pierre Uwimana was elected as Vice Chairperson, while Nyirarukundo Xavera was chosen as Secretary of the Commission.

In her acceptance speech, Mutesi Scovia pledged to ensure that journalists produce impactful stories that benefit citizens.
“I will advocate for journalists to work freely and professionally,” she said.

She added, “Today, it’s difficult to distinguish between professional journalists and individuals merely sharing opinions. We must work to address this. I also pledge to remain actively involved in fieldwork.”

The responsibilities Scovia assumes were previously held by Barore Cléophas, who served as Chairperson of RMC since December 2016.

Barore thanked his team for their dedication during challenging times.
“We are leaving a commission trusted by journalists and, more importantly, by the public. We urge continued trust in the newly elected leaders,” he said.

Barore also highlighted efforts to advocate for journalists’ rights, including cases beyond Rwanda, such as Besabesa, who was detained in Burundi. During his term, his team engaged various institutions to promote understanding of journalists’ work and held numerous discussions on their development.

Journalists also elected a seven-member Board of Directors, which includes:

Girinema Philbert (IGIHE.COM)
Dr. Libératha Gahongayire (representing Civil Society)
Muhirwa Ngabo Audence (representing the Rwanda Bar Association)
Reverend Pastor Jean-Pierre Uwimana (representing the University of Rwanda’s School of Journalism).

Mutesi Scovia, who currently leads the Mama Urwagasabo publication, is well known for her advocacy programs and political reporting.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of journalist Jérome Rwasa, former director of Radio Isangano in Karongi District, Western Province.
