Kagame Officially Submits Re-Election Candidature

President Paul Kagame has officially submitted his candidature for re-election in the upcoming July polls.

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) received his application at approximately 10:30 AM on Friday, May 17.

Kagame was accompanied to the NEC headquarters in Kiyovu, Nyarugenge District, by First Lady Jeannette Kagame, RPF-Inkotanyi Secretary-General Wellars Gasamagera, and other senior party officials.

As of now, no other presidential aspirants have submitted their candidatures, according to the NEC.

On May 9, Kagame’s party, the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF)-Inkotanyi, elected him as its flag-bearer for the 2024 presidential elections.

For the first time, the elections for President and lawmakers will be held concurrently. The presidential and parliamentary elections are scheduled for July 15, with the diaspora voting on July 14. Parliamentary candidates are yet to submit their applications, as per NEC.

Kagame, 66, has served as President of Rwanda since 2000. In the 2017 election, he was re-elected with over 98% of the vote.

The deadline for submitting candidatures is May 30.
