Jamaica hails Rwanda Defence Forces for hurricane relief efforts

Jamaica has formally expressed gratitude to the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) for their swift and dedicated assistance following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The hurricane, which struck Jamaica in October 2025, claimed 45 lives and left over 15 people missing, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Melissa damaged more than 450 schools and over 120,000 homes, affecting 626,000 people, with 950 families left homeless.

On January 14, 2026, Rwanda deployed 100 specialized military engineers to Trelawny and St. James parishes to help rebuild homes destroyed by the disaster.

The Jamaican Defence Forces shared photos of the RDF troops’ work and praised their contribution, noting that their efforts to assist communities in St. James and surrounding areas will not be forgotten.

“We will never forget the work you have done and the dedication you showed during one of the most severe disasters in our recent history,” the Jamaican military said in a statement.

Authorities highlighted the lasting impact of the RDF’s engagement, saying their presence helped restore hope and rebuild lives. “Your contribution has left an enduring mark on the people of Jamaica. You helped transform lives through every roof you rebuilt and every household you touched,” they added.

After two months of relief operations under Colonel Moses Kayigamba, the RDF troops returned to Kigali on March 16, where they were welcomed by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Major Alex Kagame.

In addition to reconstruction, RDF personnel carried out community service, including cleaning and supporting the Blessed Assurance Children’s Home, which cares for children with disabilities, further demonstrating their commitment to humanitarian service.
