COVID-19: Free SMS as the Airtel-Rwanda’s Decision to avoid the spread of the Pandemic

Among many other preventive measures against CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) pandemic that is spreading throughout the world, the Government of Rwanda has set up free SMS for citizens to communicate without meeting each other.

This has so far been accelerated by Airtel-Rwanda by setting up a free SMS service for its customers.

The announcement that was out by on Monday 16,2020 entered into force from Friday, March 20, 2020 where all customers started to send SMSs to the friends, relatives and their families in general, in order to keep in touch with Rwanda and The world to reduce the  risk of getting Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Commenting on the new program, Airtel-Rwanda CEO Amit Chawla said: “We know and appreciate that our customers are now at home, cutting back on travel and thus avoiding contact with their family and friends. Providing this free SMS method will help them stay close to their families and be able to communicate with their neighbors, as part of the authorities’ request”.

Airtel Rwanda CEO Amit Chawla said this is being done by Airtel-Rwanda in a bid to find a solution to the spread of COVID-19.

Mr. Yves Iradukunda, Secretary General in the Ministry of Technology and Innovation, said that the free SMS delivery by Airtel-Rwanda is a decision of the Government of Rwanda to help citizens continue to communicating even though they were asked by the government to stay in their homes.

“Airtel Rwanda continues to work closely with the Rwandan government to continue to prevent the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, where they do everything possible to ensure maximum human contact, as well as hand-to-hand transfers. Free SMS delivery by Airtel-Rwanda is a decision of the Government of Rwanda to continue to prevent the speed of COVID_19 epidemic.” He said.
