Advancing Inclusive Reporting: Workshop Empowers Activists and Journalists on SOGIE Rights in the Great Lakes Region

Sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) are important aspects of a person’s identity and well-being. In a recent concluded meeting organized by Human Rights First Rwanda Association with regional Activists and Journalists from the great lakes region, participants were trained in ethical and responsible reporting of SOGIE-related issues.

They learned about the impact of sensationalized or stigmatizing language in media coverage, as well as the importance of amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.

Participants also discussed ways to challenge harmful stereotypes and contribute to a more accurate and positive portrayal of LGBTQ+ individuals in regional media.

According to Me. Jonathan Musangwa, Program officer at Human Rights First Rwanda Association (HRFRA), the three-day workshop on Promoting SOGIE Rights in the region served as a valuable space for activists and journalists to learn from each other’s experiences, build solidarity, and commit to further action in advancing SOGIE rights within their communities.

By fostering a better understanding of these issues among key stakeholders, such events will contribute to creating a more inclusive society where everyone can live free from discrimination and fear in the region.

“Human Rights First Rwanda Association remains committed to advancing SOGIE rights in the great lakes region and will continue to work with various stakeholders to promote equality, dignity, and respect for LGBTQ+ individuals. Together, we can build a society where everyone can live openly and authentically, without fear of discrimination or persecution.” Musangwa says.

The workshop concluded with a call to action for all participants to continue their efforts in promoting SOGIE rights within their respective fields.

Activists were encouraged to strengthen their networks, engage in strategic partnerships, and persist in advocating for policy changes that ensure equal rights and protections for all.

Journalists were reminded of their role in shaping public opinion through responsible reporting and storytelling that fosters understanding, empathy, and acceptance.
