Museveni sworn in for seventh term, pledges intensified fight against corruption

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh term as Uganda’s Head of State, pledging to prioritize the fight against corruption and strengthen economic transformation during his new mandate.

Taking the oath of office on May 12, 2026, in Kampala, Museveni said his government will place stronger emphasis on accountability in public service, warning that corruption will not be tolerated as Uganda enters a new phase of governance.

He said the new term will focus on improving efficiency in government institutions while encouraging citizens to engage more actively in wealth creation activities such as agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

Museveni stressed that reducing dependency on state support is key to curbing corruption and accelerating development, adding that productive work and entrepreneurship will remain central to his administration’s agenda.

The ceremony, held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, was attended by regional leaders, heads of state, and thousands of invited guests.

Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, secured another five-year term after winning the January 2026 election with more than 71% of the vote.

His new mandate runs until 2031.
