Kagame: Rwanda proves Africa can successfully stage world-class cycling events

President Paul Kagame has hailed the International Cycling Union (UCI) for entrusting Rwanda with hosting its 194th Congress and global championship, saying the decision dismantles long-standing stereotypes that Africa is unfit to organize major sporting events.

Opening the assembly at the Kigali Convention Center, Kagame thanked UCI President David Lappartient for bringing the 2025 edition to Rwanda, describing it as both a vote of confidence and an opportunity for Africa to showcase its capabilities.

“Sport is a pathway to development and opportunity. When countries host international competitions, they gain momentum and achieve lasting transformation,” Kagame said.

“Too often, when Africa is selected, doubts dominate the conversation. Some still think such responsibilities are reserved for a few privileged nations. That mindset is outdated and misleading. The principle of fairness must guide sport—and by applying it, President Lappartient has earned recognition.”

Kagame applauded organizers for their professionalism and noted that global federations have a duty to expand access and inclusion. He stressed that channeling investment into Africa means betting on rapid growth and on the continent’s dynamic youth population.

“The destinies of Africa and cycling are intertwined,” he remarked. “From nurturing top athletes to building industries, advancing education, boosting tourism, and hosting global events—the potential is immense.”

He further praised the resilience of riders competing in Rwanda, pointing to Kigali’s demanding terrain of sharp climbs and steep descents. He likened their endurance to the perseverance that has driven Rwanda’s progress.

The international cycling competition began on Sunday, September 21, 2025. After the opening time trials, the riders are now contesting the road races in groups.
