Court Orders Release of Former Nyanza Mayor Ntazinda Erasme

Kigali, May 9, 2025 — The Kicukiro Primary Court has ordered the release of Ntazinda Erasme, the former Mayor of Nyanza District, who had been under investigation for alleged adultery and family abandonment.

The ruling came after his wife, the complainant in the case, submitted a written statement on May 3 forgiving Ntazinda and requesting the case be dropped. The court considered the letter as a key factor in its decision to release him.

Ntazinda was arrested on April 16, 2025, by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) as part of an ongoing inquiry into the allegations. His bail hearing, originally scheduled for May 6, was postponed at the request of his legal counsel, Me Nyangenzi Bonane.

Prior to his arrest, Ntazinda had been dismissed from his position as Mayor following a special session of the Nyanza District Council held on April 15. The council cited failure to fulfill his official duties as the reason for his removal, based on findings from a performance review.

With the court now ruling for his release, it remains unclear whether any further legal action will proceed.
