PL urges Rwandans to shun divisionism

Hon. Senator Donatille Mukabalisa, President of the Liberal Party (PL), has urged Rwandans to continue fostering unity as the foundation of national development and to distance themselves from the divisions that led the country to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

She made these remarks on April 13, 2025, during a memorial ceremony to honor former leaders and members of the PL party who were killed in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

She emphasized that remembering them is a way to honor their legacy and acknowledge the courage they displayed in founding the PL Party, which stood firmly against the injustice enforced by the oppressive regime that planned the Genocide.

She stated, “We honor their bravery, and especially the heroism of the RPA-Inkotanyi forces led by His Excellency President Paul Kagame, for stopping the Genocide.”

Senator Mukabalisa called on Rwandans to continue building unity and resilience, highlighting that Rwanda’s current achievements are the result of collective efforts.

She said, “It has been a long journey, but it has been possible due to the sacrifice and commitment of every Rwandan to take part in all initiatives aimed at developing our country.”

She noted that Rwandans must confront those who still harbor the Genocide ideology, whether within the country, in the region, or globally.

“They use social media, various media outlets — and to counter that, we call on elders, but especially the youth, for all of us to rise up and work together to fight Genocide denial and minimization.”

Senator Mukabalisa also pointed out that Rwanda suffered the tragedy of colonization by Belgium, which created ethnic divisions among Rwandans and prepared the ground for the Genocide against the Tutsi, a betrayal that persists to this day.

She concluded, “We will continue to stand united as Rwandans to fight their evil intentions, and we will succeed if we join forces.”

Among the politicians commemorated, who were PL members, are: Landouard Ndasingwa, Vénantie Kabageni, Kayiranga Charles, Niyoyita Aloys, Justin Ngagi, Jean de la Croix Rutaremara, Dr. Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, Rwayitare Augustin, Kamenya André, and Nyagasaza Narcisse.
