Empowering farmers: how Imbaraga is transforming agriculture in Rwanda

In the lush, rolling hills of Nyabihu District, farmers are embracing a new era of agricultural innovation, thanks to the unwavering support of Imbaraga Farmers’ Organization.
This transformation is evident in the success stories of cooperative leaders, agronomists, and farmers who are reaping the benefits of modern farming practices.
Jean Paul Habimana, the 50-year-old leader of the JYAMBERE MUHINZI Cooperative, reflects on their six-year journey since the cooperative’s founding in 2018.
“We’ve transitioned from traditional farming to modern practices, including the use of improved seeds and soil conservation techniques,” he said.

The cooperative’s focus on modern methods has been instrumental in enhancing agricultural productivity, a sentiment echoed by many farmers in the region.
However, challenges remain. “Our yields are sufficient, but we haven’t yet reached our target of 50 tons per hectare. Agriculture is a long journey, and we still need support, particularly in accessing high-quality seeds that can withstand unpredictable weather patterns,” Habimana explained.
Training and Innovation in Bigogwe Sector
Imbaraga’s impact extends beyond cooperative leadership. Agricultural advisor Theonest Musabyimana, based in Bigogwe Sector, highlighted the importance of proper seed preservation as a starting point for better yields.
“We ensure seeds are strong and free of damage, which minimizes losses and maximizes profits,” he noted.
Using scientific approaches, farmers are now able to estimate yields with precision. Musabyimana demonstrated how yields from a small plot, such as 1 R (100 square meters), can be extrapolated to predict productivity across an entire hectare.

Farmers like Marie Claire Nzayisenga have become ambassadors of success in potato farming. Standing in her thriving field in Nyabihu District, she proudly displayed a vine laden with potatoes. “The yields this season are excellent,” she said.
Nzayisenga attributes her success to training from Imbaraga, which emphasized the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and proper weeding techniques. “We also learned about organic and chemical fertilizers and regular crop monitoring. This has made a huge difference,” she added. Grateful for Imbaraga’s support, Nzayisenga affirmed that the abundant yields have brought satisfaction and hope to her family.
The Science Behind the Yields
At the heart of these successes is the scientific methodology employed by agronomists like Ignas Neziryayo, Executive Secretary of Imbaraga in the Northern Province. Neziryayo demonstrated a systematic approach to estimating yields on a potato demonstration plot.
“We measured 1 square meter of the field, harvested potatoes, and found 5.7 kg. This translates to 570 kg per R and an estimated 57 tons per hectare,” Neziryayo explained.
Such precise calculations enable farmers to evaluate their potential gains and adjust practices to optimize productivity.

Neziryayo’s method aligns with guidance from the Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), which estimates yields of up to 60 tons per hectare with proper seed handling. A local farmer remarked, “This method will help us calculate costs versus income and improve our productivity.”
A Pathway to agricultural transformation
Imbaraga’s multifaceted support—including training, study visits, and access to improved seeds—has empowered farmers to dream bigger. For cooperative leader Habimana and farmers like Nzayisenga, the journey toward higher yields is a testament to resilience and innovation.
The organization’s dedication to equipping farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an unpredictable climate underscores the transformative power of collaboration.
As Nyabihu’s farmers continue to adopt modern practices, they are paving the way for a brighter, more productive future in agriculture.
“Agriculture is a journey, and with continued support, we are confident that we will reach our goals,” Habimana said.
