Ghana’s Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey Elected as Commonwealth Secretary-General

On October 25, Commonwealth Heads of Government selected Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, as the next Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

This year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)—the first held in a Pacific Small Island Developing State—began on October 21 in Apia, the capital of Samoa. Among the key agenda items, leaders were set to choose a successor to the current Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland KC, whose term will conclude in March 2025.

“I’m honored and humbled by the trust of Commonwealth leaders. A lot of work lies ahead. But together, we shall work for a New Commonwealth that serves all its citizens,” the incoming Secretary-General shared on X.

Running from October 21 to 26, CHOGM 2024 built on progress made since CHOGM 2022 in Rwanda. Leaders engaged in discussions on global economic, environmental, and security challenges, focusing on ways to strengthen resilience, promote trade, drive innovation and growth, and empower the Commonwealth’s 1.5 billion young people to help create a more peaceful and sustainable future.
