President Kagame, First Lady Pay Tribute to Joseph Karemera at Farewell Ceremony

President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame attended a farewell ceremony on Wednesday, October 16, to honor the late Col. (rtd) Joseph Karemera, a former minister and founding member of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), who passed away on October 11 at the age of 70 after battling cancer.

The ceremony, held at the Parliament building in Kigali, brought together Karemera’s family, friends, senior military officials, and government leaders to pay their respects to the man who played a pivotal role in rebuilding Rwanda after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Karemera, a medical doctor, served in several high-ranking positions throughout his career, including as Rwanda’s first Minister of Health post-Genocide, Minister of Education, Senator, and Rwanda’s High Commissioner to South Africa. His contributions to the country’s healthcare and education sectors, as well as his role in the liberation of Rwanda, were widely praised during the ceremony.

As a founding member of the RPF, Karemera was instrumental in the movement’s efforts to stop the Genocide and restore peace and stability to Rwanda.
