South Sudan: 375 Families Displaced by Floods

In South Sudan, heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in parts of Jonglei State, destroying homes and displacing 375 families, leaving many without shelter.

The rain started on Monday and continued through the night of Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

Maper Kuot Akuei, a city official in Bor, expressed concerns about the contaminated water left by the floods, warning of potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases, including cholera, due to the use of unsafe water.

He stated, “The water is contaminated, and people may suffer from diseases caused by drinking unsafe water, including pneumonia, diarrhea, and other waterborne illnesses.”

Akuei explained that the floods have had devastating effects on the population, with children losing their lives, pregnant women experiencing miscarriages, and the elderly dying.

He added that the situation could worsen as the government has not implemented strong measures to address climate change impacts. Additionally, many of those taken to hospitals are not receiving essential medical supplies due to the lack of financial resources to cover treatment costs.

The United Nations reported that those affected by the floods in Jonglei State are struggling with food shortages, homelessness, and inadequate healthcare. The UN is urging the government to provide immediate aid to assist those affected by the disaster and ensure that patients in hospitals receive proper treatment.
