Rwanda to Introduce Higher Quality Moto Helmets: [Updated]

On Monday, May 27, 2024, the Government of Rwanda, through the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), in collaboration with the City of Kigali, Rwanda National Police (RNP), and Rwanda Standards Board (RSB), launched a campaign to promote the use of safer helmets for all motorcyclists in the country.

Dubbed “Tuwurinde” or “Let Us Ensure Road Safety,” the campaign aims to encourage motorcycle riders and passengers to wear new, high-quality helmets to enhance safety and save lives in the event of accidents. These modern helmets are superior to the older models previously in use, following a recent survey that indicated the older models offered less protection in accidents.

The campaign was initiated on May 27, 2024, by various officials, including the Minister of Infrastructure, Dr. Jimmy Gasore, the Mayor of Kigali, Samuel Dusengiyumva, motorcyclists, and other stakeholders. The new helmets adhere to stringent quality standards, including criteria for impact resistance, head protection, and visibility from all angles.

The initiative is governed by the standards RS 576: 2024 Protective helmets for motorcycle and moped users-Specification established by Rwanda Standards Board (RSB).

Initially, 500 motorcycles of varying sizes—small, medium, and large—will be equipped with these helmets. Minister Dr. Jimmy Gasore stated that for motorcyclists with older helmets, the government is arranging to replace them with the new, modern helmets at no cost to the riders.

Regarding those who purchased older helmets before the new regulations were established, Dr. Gasore mentioned that they will continue to be sold until the current stock is depleted, after which the older models will no longer be available on the market.
