Deadly Downpours Ravage East Africa, Claiming 155 Lives in Tanzania

As relentless heavy rains pummel East Africa, Tanzania reels from the devastation, with Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa reporting 155 fatalities and 236 injuries.

The dire situation, exacerbated by the El Nino climate pattern, has left over 200,000 people and 51,000 households affected, prompting urgent rescue efforts and displacement of residents.

The havoc wrought by flooding and landslides has ravaged infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and railways, underscoring the urgent need for disaster mitigation measures.

Majaliwa attributes the catastrophic impact to environmental degradation, emphasizing the role of deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices, and unregulated livestock grazing.

In Kenya, 35 fatalities have been reported, with ongoing flooding inundating parts of Nairobi. President William Ruto mobilizes a multi-agency flood response to address the escalating crisis and provide relief to affected communities.

Burundi, too, faces displacement and hardship, with approximately 96,000 people displaced by relentless rains.

Meanwhile, Somalia braces for intensified flooding during the “Gu” rainy season, exacerbating humanitarian concerns in the region.

As East Africa battles the catastrophic impact of heavy rains, coordinated efforts are underway to provide aid, ensure safety, and mitigate the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
