ICT in education will transform student performance

The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) expects significant results in students’ performance after teachers including those from primary schools were trained in using Information Communication Technology (ICT) through Internet Society Project that aims to promote quality education in Rwanda.

MINEDUC has said this after some teachers from Bugesera District’s schools affirmed that the recent training in ICT they have got will play a pivotal role in students’ performance during the 2022 national examination.

Obed Nzayisenga, a teacher from G.S Nyirarukobwa says that the use of ICT in schools helped them to deliver skills at a very promising level.  

“The benefits are obvious, there is a lot to say about the fact that technology has been introduced in schools such as the ‘Internet Society’ which has made Nyirarukobwa school to think of bringing electricity due to be able to operate computer equipment they have given us. It is clear that the changes were so obvious that the teachers themselves are motivated to teach and help students to increase their knowledge in all aspects with the help of technology.” he said.

Emerithe Mukandori, who is also a teacher at Mbyo Primary School believes that technology has made a significant difference in the improvement and delivery of lessons to students.

“We have gained knowledge in technology through the “Internet for Education Program” and we as teachers have had the ability to explore and gain more knowledge through adapting to technology use to use. So we expect that there will be a positive result in students’ performance this year because we have found different ways to give them more exercises as we are no longer writing questions on the blackboard, instead we give them questions on papers after taping and printing them with computers; and this helps us to give them as many questions as possible.” Mukandori said.

Benjamin Mugwaneza is the headteacher of Kayovu Primary School. He says that students’ performance has significantly improved due to the fact that teachers can prepare and give many questions for tests and examinations with the help of technology that enables them to use computers and printing out the students’ home works.

“The success rate has increased because before we used to write on the blackboard which could not allow us to give many questions because the blackboard is small and there is not enough space, but now we use technology and we can give tests on printed papers by machines, which allows the child to do more questions, thus providing knowledge to the child because he/she is able to do the questions included in the whole lesson.”

Gaspard Twagirayezu, the State Minister in charge of primary and secondary education in the Ministry of Education announced that there is much expectation to have many students performing at a higher level this year due to the fact that teachers’ role in the preparation of students is remarkable.

“In the preparation of exams, the role of teachers has increased due to the training in technology they get quite often from various projects that give them the ability to use the Internet where they can find different information on certain subjects, whether it is visiting the REB online library or other websites that contain important information that helps teachers to give knowledge to the student”, Twagirayezu said.

Since it is clear that technology is going to be a part of everyday life in the world, it is important to plan for it earlier based on the fact that “what a person will be is prepared earlier at his/her younger age’ and continues to build and integrate it well ” according to experts.
