Building resilience: How citizens were supported to escape poverty in Muhanga

Redempta Mukanubaha, a citizen of Muhanga District in Shyogwe Sector has been living a miserable life during a couple of years ago and her children struggled to access education due to lack of school equipments.

The mother of four has benefited from the support of a local non-government organisation dubbed “Hope of Family” that donated her a pig and from that she managed to get manure to increase agriculture productivity that allowed her to buy scolastic materials for the children and to fight malnutrition in her family.

“The project taught us about better education of our children and gave us pigs. Furthermore, they helped me to have a vegetable (kitchen) garden, such that my children cannot sufferer from malnutrition,” Mukanubaha said.

“My children are performing well at school; I could not follow on their education before because I had no capacity to buy notebooks and pens for them. The pig helped me to sort everything out,” she added.

The project pledged to continue renovating 20 houses for twenty needy families in Muhanga District and give them cows to help them graduate from poverty. They also mobilide citizens to form saving groups and train them about good financial management.
