Nyamasheke to see over 10 new hotels built

Nyamasheke District is set to welcome a wave of new investments, with more than ten investors expressing interest in building hotels since the district received its new master plan five months ago.

The announcement was made by Mayor Narcisse Mupenzi during a graduation ceremony for more than 80 students who completed hospitality service training offered free of charge by Sangira Talent Pool, an institution that trains secondary school graduates in hotel and service management skills.

Nyamasheke is among Rwanda’s districts with vast but untapped potential in tourism and hospitality. Despite its natural attractions, the district currently has fewer than ten hotels. Out of its 15 sectors, ten border Lake Kivu, while the remaining five are adjacent to Nyungwe National Park—one of which borders both the lake and the park.

Among the new investors is Bobito Masanga, founder of Sangira Talent Pool, who plans to construct a five-star hotel that will also serve as a training center. The facility will provide both local and international certifications in hospitality to young people from Nyamasheke and across Rwanda.

Masanga, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, said he chose Nyamasheke because of its tourism potential and family roots.
“Another reason is that this is where my mother comes from,” he said.

Mayor Mupenzi emphasized Nyamasheke’s tourism potential, noting its unique landscape.
“Combining Nyungwe National Park, Lake Kivu, and our scenic hills makes Nyamasheke an ideal destination for tourism and hotel investment,” he said.

The district is also popular for coffee and tea tourism, being Rwanda’s leading area in tree cover and tea cultivation along the edges of Nyungwe Forest.

“Since the District Council approved the master plan in May, we’ve already received over ten investors who bought land for hotels,” Mayor Mupenzi added. “This is clear evidence that Nyamasheke is on the rise.”
